broken paddle :(

Postby mcayouette » Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:39 pm

This afternoon I was in my pool and showed my parents what cartwheels looked like... The next thing I know parents heard a huge CRACK while I was doing a trick... they thought I hurt my back or something... parents freaking out a bit! ahah I didn't hit anything other than water... but apparently my paddle snap right in half :(

Its a Werner Player Carbon Bent Shaft... its a paddle with a fairly good track record but it's been a nightmare for me.

Let's rewind a few months back... I got my paddle for Christmas didn't really paddle much until late April where my blade snap right off going down Hogs Back Falls it was the fifth time ever I used that paddle... ended up hitting my head on rocks because I couldn't roll back up and the water pushed me on the far river left wall which is never fun and eventually swam.

Remember Hogs Back is less than 15feet its really not that big of a drop... paddle took 3 weeks + to get repaired (you have to pay shipping one way believe me it aint cheap) and now it seems like the repair failed because someone messed up the repair so its seems now i'm speculating because of where it broke... it was about an inch from the center joint... I'm sending the paddle back AGAIN guess who has to pay again.... yup me...

I'm up to a point where I don't want it back since my faith in this specific piece of equipment has been shattered.

Sounds like I'm back to good old tech Fibre Glass straight shaft! I've paddle it for at least six years and living strong... the blades are getting smaller... but at least I can paddle with confidence its not a lemon!

Let's see what happens next. :P

Sorry to hear about your loss. Isn't that "the paddle", supposed to be the best out there? With a lifetime waranty?
I'm curious. I hope they exchange it for you, not just repair it.

Good luck!

paddles that i've found are reliable -

werner double diamond.
werner carbon straight shafts
so far the AT2 SL has held up really well... haven't used it much though.

also look forward to an AT paddle that apparently never breaks with a lifetime garuntee... apparently you break it they send you a new one.

Brent, it's called the at2 superduty its 39 ounces, i used stephen wright's on the rouge one day and found it to have a very nice feel if you like at paddles (as i do) at hasn't been clear about the warranty and i've asked two team members about it but nobody seems to know what the details of the warranty are, all it says is a limited lifetime warranty on the shaft. the paddle has an msrp of 500 US so it will easily be the most expensive paddle on the market but with the kind of garauntee that neal is making i plan on buying one

if AT plans on clarifying their warranty then I'd probably spend a bit more to save later.. never know what can happen with these composite paddles these days.

Werner told me they are replacing my broken paddle with a new one... should have it in 2 weeks. Looking to sell it... if your interested in a brand new paddle for 400bucks flat let me know.

i looked into at's warranty information and it is essentially if you break the paddle on the river at the shaft, they'll repair or replace it, but after a year if the blades break then you're outta luck for a free repair but they'll do a cost repair(generally $60-70), the reason the shaft is garaunteed is that AT is doing this reinforcement within the shaft to add strength to the shaft, which is probably why it's the source of the lifetime garauntee.
