Start of Fall paddling season

Postby ThomL » Sat Sep 04, 2010 4:00 pm

It's that time of year again, when the paddling opportunities are only limited by your willingness to drive vast distances. Some of the best paddling in Eastern North America will be over the next 6-7 weeks.Bookmark the AW release schedule calendar and keep an eye on all the releases scheduled for the next month or two.

The highlights:
Beaver river: an upstate New York gem that is only paddleable for a few weekends. The lines are fun and mostly more impressive than dangerous: 3 sections to choose from.

Gauley season!: Starting next weekend and continuing until mid-October: one of the best big-water runs in the east with 2 sections to choose from: Upper and Lower. Think Ottawa river volume with Beaver creek steepness.

Upper Yough: like boulders? This is one of the best rockhopping, pillow surfing, scrub-boofing runs around for folks that like steep, but not death-defying. Release schedule

Bottom Moose!: Every weekend in October with enough big-water steepness to satisfy you until spring (hopefully)

Many thanks to American Whitewater for all the work they do in opening up and maintaining rivers that we can all enjoy.

It was a stellar weekend - the first Beaverfest for me - seeing descents of Taylorville (x4), Eagle( x3), Moshier (Falls x 3) and Raquette (x2).

Great whitewater for classes 3 through 5.
Easy access, beautiful camping.

Big things are in the works. Stay tuned.

I didn't see any dates on the calender for the upper yough, they are releasing all week before gauley I hope??

Who Is making the trip for gauley fest?? It's worth the drive if you can only get down for 3 days.

We are heading down Monday, upper yough, or if anything else in the area is running. Any recomendations in the gauley/ friendsville area? Is cheat or new any good in lower water.. Hopefully get a bit of rain and get some other creeks up.

Cheers
Zack

Over on Boatertalk, the weekday releases are unsure... It's questionable if the current lake level will allow for releases... Rain dance?

We're driving down on Thursday for paddling the Gauley friday and saturday (for the first time)

For some reason, AW doesn't have Upper Yough releases on their calendar. They are here.

Unless there is a ton of rain, paddling in that area in the fall is a matter of paddling releases: Upper Yough, Gauley, sometimes the Lower Yough (think Lower Mad, with slighly higher difficulty). You could try Valley falls. A couple of the drops are runnable even at low levels.
